listening for water

the origin of this blog's title came from a bit of creative nonfiction i wrote in high school. about traveling down into the grand canyon by mule, the visceral experience of heat, and becoming attuned to the sound of water as it traveled down the canyon's walls, rifts, crevices to join the river below.

i was thinking of the blog's title this morning as i explored more blogs on minimalism, simplicity, etc. listening for water to me means paying attention and focusing in on the quiet essentials of life.

i particularly appreciate this concept of minimalism from joshua becker, of becoming minimalist: “The intentional promotion of the things I most value and the removal of anything that distracts me from it.”

he notes that he thinks this "puts a positive spin on the lifestyle by highlighting the fact that minimalism is ultimately about removing distractions so that I can focus on the more important things in life."

i seem to be in the mood (again) to focus on what is most essential and important to me.
